Mr & Mrs Black 🖤 Eat Drink & Caffeinate: Detroit
Exploring coffee shops, cocktail bars and healthy-ish restaurants is our favorite thing to do in a new city, so I’m excited to share this series of all of the places we find while traveling. Currently, we live in Detroit, but before we did we frequently visited and have kept a big list of all of the places we love to share with our friends when they visit. Here’s a few of our favorite spots:
Takoi Corktown // The atmosphere rivals the food here. Inside a shipping container you’ll find a dark lounge with Asian fusion share plates, an impressive cocktail menu and a DJ spinning all night. Limited reservations available online.
Wright & Company Downtown // Off street level, this massive loft style small plates restaurant is hardly a hidden gem. Make a reservation or wait at the bar, they’ve got an extensive wine list.
Craft Work West Village // This quiet and cool American spot reminds us of a library. Book cases, communal tables and a great cocktail list. Super cozy for a date, lots of seafood options, and there’s usually no wait.
Gather Eastern Market // Our definition of healthy-ish. Great small plates for all types of diets, they have Faygo AND whiskey slushies.
Los Galanes Mexicantown // Mexicantown is no joke - ALL of the restaurants are authentic and delicious, but Los Galanes is our favorite.
Brome Modern Eatery Downtown // Our favorite healthy lunch spot, and yes, we consider burgers as healthy as a salad. Vegan options and a juice shop upstairs.
Chili Mustard Onions Brush Park (🌱Vegan) // Your favorite fast food - Big Mac, Coney Dog, Soft Serve Ice Cream, has all been made vegan! Must visit for veggies and meat eaters.
Candy Bar Downtown // All you need to know: IT’S PINK! Okay, and it’s in the Siren hotel with a giant disco ball. Really small inside but the perfect intimate Barbie Dreambar. If I don’t have an exact replica in my house someday, I’ll be disappointed.
Record Shop + Bar Downtown // Right next door but a much different vibe, Record Shop Paramita Sound recently reopened with an attached bar. Try the mocktail.
Bad Luck Bar Downtown // In the alley behind one of our favorite coffee shops you’ll find the entrance to Bad Luck Bar. There’s usually always a wait but it’s SO worth it. An extensive list of cocktails including some rare and some dealers choice, the bartenders need a ladder for all of those options.
Evening Bar Downtown // At the back of the Shinola Hotel, Evening Bar is always playing the best music and has a solid cocktail collection.
The Royce Foxtown // Wine and cheese, the perfect combo. The Royce does tastings and wine flights, and you can build your own board. There’s also a great wine shop inside, so consider this try before you buy.
Standby Downtown // Inside The Belt behind an all black door, you’ll find an even darker cocktail bar and restaurant that’s one of Matthew’s favs, no surprise.
Madcap Coffee Downtown // Madcap has an extensive coffee list and looks a lot like a science lab. The 616 blend is my favorite, named after the area code where I and Madcap started 😜 FYI there’s no chairs so take this one to go.
Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters Downtown // You know, up until a few months ago I thought it was called “Desert Oasis.” The Americana theme fits much better that way. This is the best place to work for the day out of the bunch.
Astro Coffee Corktown // Pour-overs galore! And lots of vegan treats. Perfect to stop by if you’re driving into the city.
Drought Downtown // Okay this isn’t a coffee place but they have coffee. Drought is the go-to juice spot for aesthetics and etcs. You’ll find it in a lot of local businesses too. Fun fact: our office used to be a Drought and people always try to come in for juice.
Where should we head to next? 🤔
